3 NPC lawmakers stay with ‘Gibo’

Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) congressmen Thursday assailed reports claiming that they have abandoned Lakas-Kampi-CMD (LKC) presidential bet Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. as their candidate for presidency, saying that they are now formalizing their decision to join the ruling party.

This developed as another NPC stalwart, Isabela Rep. Giorgidi Aggabao also belied reports that he has joined a small faction of the Northern Luzon Alliance that aired support for opposition bet, Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party.

Aggabao, a Bar topnotcher who is married to a niece of NPC founder and former Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco, told the Teodoro camp that he never gave words to anybody that he is no longer supporting Teodoro.

LKC senatorial bet Raul Lambino, who was appointed as the party’s spokesman on the May 10 polls, said Reps. Zenaida Angping of Manila; Francis Arnaiz of Negros Occidental and Red Durano of Cebu were expected to be make formal their long standing intention to join the LKC within the week.

Ray Roquero, party secretary general, said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and his family, who are politically influential in Cebu, are also backing Teodoro whose poll survey ratings have continued to surge as the elections draw near.

On the other hand, an NPC source revealed that party elders are currently campaigning strongly for support for Teodoro among party members who are joining the local race.

Roquero refused to deny nor confirm that the LKC has also started to renew ties with NPC allies to seek support for Teodoro.

Teodoro, who used to be NPC secretary general, has maintained alliances with many of his former partymates and should be expected to gain their backing in the presidential race, said Roquero. The NPC leadership’s declaration that it was not coalescing with Villar’s party has also been considered as a glaring indication that Teodoro still has big support from the Cojuangco-founded party.

Appearing at yesterday’s Usaping Balita News Forum, Lambino said Angping, Arnaiz and Durano have strongly protested a disinformation campaign claiming that they have agreed to support the candidacy of Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party. “We are equally concerned that alleged defections from Lakas are being played up in the media when most of these are lies. Only a handful have actually jumped ship, we don’t mind these moves because only two or three have done so,” said Lambino.

Another party stalwart, Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga said those who betrayed the trust of the party are liable to receive the same treatment from their constituents. “We are supposedly the national leaders in our respective congressional leaders. Thus, as national leaders we are held in high esteem by the public and are bound to honor our basic commitment and palabra de honor,” Barzaga told re;porters during the forum at Serye Cafe.
