So finishes 5th place in SPICE Cup
By Jaime Pilapil
Filipino chess wizard GM Wesley So finished fifth place in the prestigious 2009 SPICE Cup held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
So (Elo 2646) collected 4.5 points out of nine draws and a loss in the double round robin event where six young grandmasters were exclusively invited.
Ukranian GM Yuriy Kuzubov (Elo 2635) won the event with 5.5 points out of a win and nine draws.
Russian GM Dmitry Andreikin (2648) and GM Rauf Memedov of Azerbenjia placed second and third respectively. The three – Kuzubov, Andreikin and Memedov – actually ended with identical 5.5 points.
However, the three played a double round robin blitz playoff to settle as to who would bring home the coveted SPICE Cup diadem.
Placing fourth was So’s 2nd round tormentor GM Jon Ludvig Hammer (Elo 2583) of Norway. Hammer had two wins, three loses and five draws.
Finishing dead last was American GM Varuzhan Akobian (Elo 2626). Akobian had one win, two loses and seven draws.
Despite the fifth place finish of So, the experience derived from this high-level tournament would greatly help improve the Filipino’s confidence in competing in high-caliber events. -30-
