9th Rd 2009 SPICE Cup: So dead last

Philippines’ pride GM Wesley So needs a win today for a decent finish at the 2009 SPICE Cup being held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

So (Elo 2644) is dead last after nine rounds in the double-round robin Invitational Grandmaster category with four points out of eight draws and a loss. Before round 9, So was placing fifth in the six-man event of elite young grandmasters.

The country’s top chess player swapped places with American GM Varuzha Akobian (2636) after the latter trounced formerly pacesetting Norwegian GM Jon Ludvig Hammer (Elo 2585) in 38 moves of Gruenfeld Defense.

So is facing 19-year-old Russian GM Dmitry Andreikin (Elo 2659) in the final round. A win against Andreikin will most likely allow So to end in fifth place, provided Akobian will either draw or lose his last game.

After nine rounds, American GM Yuriy Kuzubov (Elo 2636) leads the pact with five points. Closely chasing him is Dmitry with identical 5 points and followed by Hammer with 4.5 points.

Azerbajian GM Rauf Memedov (Elo 2626) has 4.5 points, Akobian with 4 points and So, 4 points. -30-

  1. actually the pack is tight with just a point difference among tourney leaders, this is good exposure for wesley..and also he needs a good second should he want to maximize his tourney performance.
